I grew up in Tredegar on a local council estate, going to the local comprehensive school.

I come from a mining and steel working family who are spread right across the Blaenau Gwent constituency. I live in Nantyglo.

Before I was elected MP for Blaenau Gwent in May 2010, I was Director of Policy and Partnerships for a national charity working in the health sector, and campaigning for people with communications disability.

I'm divorced, with two daughters.
