Commending the hard work of CAB in Blaenau Gwent

Nick Smith MP has commended the work of the Citizens’ Advice Bureau after the charity dealt with 11,788 cases in Blaenau Gwent in 2014/15.

With debt (4,337 cases) and benefits and tax credits (4,310 cases) being the biggest causes of problems in the borough, Nick Smith MP said the service is a vital front line to support people in times of trouble.

Speaking as the figures were revealed, Mr Smith said: “We deal with many hundreds of casework items in the office on a yearly basis, so I know first-hand how hard it must be for the Citizens’ Advice Bureau in Blaenau Gwent dealing with thousands.

“It is an important front line service that helps people to overcome the challenges they face. I intend to keep working with them in the future and tackle these problems head on.”

The list of top five problems for Blaenau Gwent is completed by consumer issues (1,293), employment (524) and housing (386).

New evidence shows 78% of Citizens Advice clients said they wouldn’t have been able to solve their problem without the help they received from their local service.

Gillian Guy, Chief Executive of Citizens Advice, said: “The right advice can help people find a way forward. It’s very reassuring to know the charity has the backing of Nick Smith MP, who recognises the difference free and impartial advice can make to people going through difficult times.

“Working together with Nick Smith MP, we want to empower people to address their problems so they can change their situation for the better.”
