It is an honour for me, as a local lad, to have been selected to fight my home seat, as Labour's parliamentary candidate for Blaenau Gwent. I was born into a mining and steelmaking family, lived locally on a council estate and went to school at Tredegar Comprehensive.
Blaenau Gwent is my passion. I promise Blaenau Gwent people that I will stand up for them and be their champion. My priorities are to work with our Labour governments in Westminster and Cardiff Bay to:
- help people get decent, well-paid jobs, particularly after many are struggling to cover household costs as we get through these tough economic times
- invest in local schools and health facilities
- deliver results on tackling crime
- respect the needs of our pensioners and give them a fair deal
- deliver an environmentalist agenda, to keep our green and pleasant land.
As we approach the next election the choice is clear: Labour, whose plan for growing Britain out of recession is helping families and businesses. Or the Tories, who would give tax breaks to the wealthiest and deliver cuts to public services, at the worst possible time for the country.
Blaenau Gwent will be a crucial battleground in the election, as we fight to ensure both that Labour beats off the Tories and that Blaenau Gwent has a real champion, able to stand up for the constituency in Parliament.
